One song, Glory...

Day 12

The other day I was looking into my archives for certain pictures about a New Year's celebration in Miami Beach (day that, at some point I'll tell you the story) but I came across a picture of a friend, holding a Playbill from Rent.  It made me think about that day a little bit, in part because it was so long ago (2010) but also because that day, I genuinely started to like a lot the Broadway musicals.

You see, up until that point, I wasn't really into musicals.  Yes, I may have seen many Disney movies and the occasional musical movie, but never really liked them on stage.  Prior to Rent, I may have seen three musicals on stage and funny enough two of them about Disney movies.

First was "Victor Victoria" in 2005, can't recall if it was with my parents or what, but I guess the only cool thing about it was that I got to see the glorious Freddy Beras-Goico and Cecilia Garcia on top of their game (both very well-known Dominican artists).  The second one was in 2006, also in DR, and it was "The Beauty and the Beast" with what many today may call the OG nepo baby Stefanie "Techy" Fatule, I was amazed by the production but nothing else, and lastly, and just because I was vacationing in New York, "The Lion King" on Broadway.  I was very hungry prior the show, I sat down at Chinese restaurant and ate chow fan like a pig and pretty much slept the whole show.

But then, in 2010 as mentioned above, a friend asks me to go with her to see Rent at FIU.  She almost begged me to go with her and well, I freaking loved it.  The music is fantastic: a rock opera so it hooked me right away, the topics were very adult, it was funny, sad, amusing, crazy, unpredictable, etc. I had heard of it in the past but had no idea about anything.  FIU was promoting the play fairly extensively in part because the director was an alumnus who also did the Broadway for many years (Mr. Andy Señor) whom I met that night and have been following his career ever since and he is kind of a big deal, he even directed Rent in Cuba and made a documentary about it (Revolution Rent, check it on HBO).

Slowly but surely, I started to check more and more plays and musicals, and besides the music I found myself checking all the technical details of the show (how did they do this or that, how is the quality of the sound, who move what, how did that thing come into the stage, what technology is being used, etc).  Some plays can be silly (Rock of Ages), others extremely serious (Dear Evan Hansen), others just a fucking amazing party (Moulin Rouge), others satirical as fuck (Book of Mormon) or just simply they tell a story (Matilda) or teach you history (Hamilton).

I understand is not everybody's cup of tea (I see you Herr K), surely it wasn't mine, but theater does have its charm.  Getting to see very talented people do their thing is pretty cool, though that said, I still prefer movies and concerts over theater 😜

Thanks a lot to Kim for this one.
